Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has called on head coach Ruben Amorim to start Amad Diallo in upcoming fixtures.

The Ivorian international was named on the substitutes bench against Arsenal at the weekend, with Diogo Dalot starting at right wingback. However, Ferdinand feels that, despite concerns about Amad’s defensive capabilities, the player’s ability on the ball means he should be named in the starting lineup:

“I think he’ll even be sitting there, Amad, saying: ‘Play me against anybody, because I’ll get our team higher up the pitch and I can beat people.’ The way that Amorim plays you need people that are going to beat people with the ball or run beyond people and Amad can do both. It’s just, can he do it from a right wing-back position? If Man Utd do get pinned back at any time he’s playing, is he able to defend and cope defensively? They’re the question marks we’ve got.”

“But if you set out to dominate the game possession-wise, Amad is an absolute must in this team. Whether it’s right wing-back or right wing, I think he has to play. I think over the last season and even in this one game here today, he’s shown that he’s got the confidence and the ability to be a game-changer.”

Will Amad start against Fulham this weekend?

After Dalot flattered to deceive against Arsenal, having failed to create anything meaningful chances, you feel that the Ivorian has a good chance of starting.

Amorim may have reservations about Amad defensively but goals win games and the winger has the talent to test opposition backlines and create openings for others to exploit.

While losing the opening game at home is certainly far from ideal, Amorim will take heart from certain aspects of the performance.

Both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo impressed, and if Amad and Benjamin Sesko are added into the mix, the Red Devils should be able to pose problems for most teams going forward.
