Gary Neville has made it clear that Ruben Amorim can’t afford to field Casemiro and Christian Eriksen together in the same team anymore.
The pair were part of the starting line-up in Manchester United’s disappointing loss to Newcastle on Monday night, where they were outplayed by the Magpies who secured a comfortable 2-0 victory. Alexander Isak and Joelinton scored early goals, putting the visitors firmly in control. Now, with a daunting trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool looming this Sunday, Neville has urged Amorim to rethink his strategy.
The former United captain believes a midfield featuring both Casemiro and Eriksen won’t stand a chance against Arne Slot’s side. “Casemiro and [Christian] Eriksen haven’t got the legs to get around. Casemiro and Eriksen shouldn’t be playing together in the Premier League. It is just so easy,” Neville shared with Sky Sports.
“When you saw the Manchester United starting XI you had to think it would be very difficult for this team to play well. The two wing-backs aren’t very good in the attacking part of the pitch. The two central midfielders can’t run. The back three have no legs.
“They have been absolutely awful. You are watching the worst pound-for-pound team in the country. There are only three of them who can say they have been alright under Amorim: Dalot, [Noussair] Mazraoui and Amad.”
Amorim remains steadfast in his tactical approach, despite acknowledging the challenge that comes with facing a team like Liverpool, he has emphasized the importance of sticking to his system.
“It’s like playing with three it’s, more or less, the same thing of playing with four. We can change the characteristics, if you play with Amad on the wing, it could be a little bit different. We have some games that we press in 4-4-2. So I don’t see it that way,” Amorim explained. “I didn’t choose the players specifically for that position, but that I already knew, but I have to sell my idea, if I’m going to change all the time, it’s going to be even worse. But I understand that they have a lot of difficulties.
“They spend two years playing one way and then they are playing another. And with a lot of losses, it’s really tough on them and you can feel it during the games. Even today, when we try to score and we are near to score, it’s more from them than the organisation.”
With the team at a critical juncture, Amorim underlined the necessity to push forward and refine their play: “It’s a very difficult moment and we have to fight for the next game and to implement the idea to win games and also to have the performance, because I think we are losing some things from the last games.”
