Arsenal are on the hunt to claim back-to-back victories at Old Trafford for the first time in 46 years when they take on Manchester United this weekend.
Sunday’s bout is the third meeting between the two long-time rivals this season, with United avenging their Premier League defeat at the Emirates by knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup on penalties in the third round.
However, their FA Cup journey came to an end last week, and Ruben Amorim merely has the Europa League to play for during his first season at the club. United are on track for their worst-ever Premier League campaign, currently sitting 14th with 11 games to go.
While the Red Devils earned a 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad on Thursday, the Gunners were rampant on their recent European adventure. Mikel Arteta’s side put PSV Eindhoven to the sword in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, securing a remarkable 7-1 victory.
However, their recent scoring issues have seen them lose further ground to Liverpool at the top of the league table. They could be 16 points behind by the time they kick off this weekend, with the Reds hosting bottom-of-the-pile Southampton on Saturday.
Here’s our preview of Man Utd vs Arsenal in the Premier League
Man Utd team news
Amorim has said he’ll try not to risk the fitness of some of United’s injured stars this weekend, suggesting that Manuel Ugarte and Harry Maguire won’t feature against the Gunners after the pair missed the midweek trip to San Sebastian.
Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo are out for the long haul, while Patrick Dorgu is suspended after he was sent off against Ipswich on Man Utd’s previous Premier League outing.
The United boss said Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, and Mason Mount will play again this season, but they won’t be available on Sunday. Jonny Evans has been out since Christmas.
Former Arsenal youth starlet Chido Obi-Martin could feature.
Predicted Man Utd lineup vs Arsenal: Onana; Yoro, De Ligt, Maguire; Mazraoui, Fernandes, Eriksen, Dalot; Zirkzee, Garnacho; Hojlund.
Arsenal team news
There’s unlikely to be much change given what went down in Eindhoven. Mikel Merino was back among the goals in Arsenal’s rout, and he’ll likely lead the line at Old Trafford with Leandro Trossard and Ethan Nwaneri functioning out wide.
The main question mark surrounds the left-back position. Will Arteta retain his faith in teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly, or will chaos merchant Riccardo Calafiori return to the fold after his impressive display in midweek?
There’s no change on the injury front. Arsenal are still without Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, and Takehiro Tomiyasu.
Predicted Arsenal lineup vs Man Utd: Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Partey, Rice, Odegaard; Nwaneri, Merino, Trossard.
Man Utd vs Arsenal score prediction
Gary Neville’s already asserted his confidence that Man Utd will get a result on Sunday, and I do think this will be a competitive game. I don’t think we should all believe Arsenal’s goalscoring issues have completely disappeared because of Tuesday’s stunning victory.
United have shown up in the big games under Amorim, and they’re bound to make life tough for their visitors. The Gunners will enjoy territiory and control, but United’s defensive structure should be compact enough to frustrate Arteta’s men for periods. Arsenal certainly won’t be facing up against the stringent man-marking which afforded them so much space in midweek.
However, I just don’t see how the hosts win this game. They just don’t have the required threat to trouble a sound Gunners structure. So, with that in mind, I’ll back Arsenal’s sustained pressure to eventually tell in a slender win. An early goal could open the floodgates.
Prediction: Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal
