Manchester United somehow managed to lose a game the team was in complete control of.
United were 2-0 up within the first half an hour and pushing for a third. Rasmus Hojlund looked like he might even score a hat-trick.
Then the game turned, with Marcus Rashford receiving a red card and United conceded two goals within minutes, changing the dynamic of the game.
United did take a 3-2 lead before ultimately losing 4-3 with two late goals against.
Laudrup says win is all that matters
Former Denmark international Michael Laudrup was not overly enthused by Copenhagen’s performance, admitting they did not have control of the game for large parts.
Yet, what mattered was the win, and he says that in years to come, that is all which will be remembered.
Laudrup told Tipsbladet: “There are several aspects to it. The first is the result. That you win 4-3 over Manchester United, but the whole game was atypical in many ways. Crazy, if we can call it that.
“You are completely gone, and then a red card comes. You are back 2-2 and have momentum. Then second half, there condition. Then you will fall far behind, even if you are a man more. And then it ends with two goals at the end. It is a really wild match.
“These are the kind of matches here that will be in the books and in people’s memories – also in 5, 10, 20 years. Then they have, as it were, blurred out how the match ended as a process. All that remains is that they won 4-3 over Manchester United in 2023. It is a huge result for a Danish club to win over one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
Copenhagen boss backs red card
The sending off was the turning point of the game and opinion was split on whether Marcus Rashford deserved the red card or not. While not seemingly intentional, Rashford still endangered his opponent with a studs-first challenge.
Erik ten Hag was not impressed at all, however, opposing manager Jacob Neestrup felt it was the correct call.
The Copenhagen boss was quoted by United.no: “Everything looks worse in slow motion. Rashford doesn’t do it on purpose, of course, but it’s a red card. It cannot be discussed. I can understand the frustration, because that is what changes the game.”
Not since Nani in 2013 have Manchester United seen a red card impact a Champions League game so crucially.
But unlike that match against Real Madrid where the tie spun away from us, United actually regained control of this one and appeared in a strong position heading into the last 10-15 minutes. Then the same old defensive errors resurfaced, with the team wilting under pressure and now rank bottom of the group.
