If Arsenal planned to have a quiet January transfer window then things may have just changed following three consecutive defeats.

Mikel Arteta’s side have had a damaging few weeks, highlighting the gaps that still exist in their promising project.

And as well as an obvious need for a striker in the January transfer window, Arsenal would also benefit from the arrival of a midfielder.

That being said, Arsenal are now in talks to sign Everton’s Amadou Onana, a deal that could progress very quickly.

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri has now shared an update on X detailing that intensive discussions are now underway.

Onana would be keen to join Arsenal this month and wants to stay in the Premier League.

Tavolieri said: “Talks intensive currently ongoing between Everton & Arsenal for Amadou Onana.

“The Belgian midfielder – who has always put his priority to stay in [the] Premier League – keen on the move.

“Things could develop quickly… wait and see!”

And whilst a move for £58m Onana would look advisable, fans may be divided on the idea.

In another window, and perhaps even just a few weeks ago, Arsenal fans would probably be very excited by this news.

However, with a lack of goals currently the biggest concern at the club, the faithful would probably rather see that money spent on a striker.

Onana is an ‘outstanding‘ player, but he’s not a goal-scorer.

On the other side of the argument, some would argue that signing a number six would allow Arsenal’s current squad to score more goals, supported better in midfield.

If Onana did arrive at Arsenal in the January transfer window then Declan Rice would probably make a permanent move to the number eight.

Onana, Rice and Martin Odegaard would be a formidable three, allowing Arsenal’s wingers to thrive.

That being said, one of the club’s striker targets has now admitted that he’s an Arsenal fan, which may encourage another move this month.

There’s clearly a few moving pieces for Arteta in January, and the next few weeks could be crucial to any aspirations of silverware.
