Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United have failed to win against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Manchester derby.
Manchester United took on Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils lost the match 3-1.
Marcus Rashford put the Red Devils in the lead with a superb strike after just eight minutes. It was 1-0 to United at half time.
However, City, who won the Premier League, the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup last weekend, stepped up their game in the second half and won the Manchester derby 3-1.
Phil Foden scored two of the goals for Pep Guardiola’s side. Norway international striker Erling Haaland was also on target for the home team.
It was not a bad performance from United for most of the match, and one of the players who did well for the visiting team was Jonny Evans.
Praise for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans vs Manchester City
Evans started in central defence alongside Raphael Varane, and former United player and BBC Sport pundit Dion Dublin was impressed by the display produced by the 36-year-old Northern Ireland international.
During his time on the pitch at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, Evans had a pass accuracy of 80%, took 31 touches, attempted one dribble, and made three tackles, two interceptions and four clearances.
Evans was very good in the first half and was a rock at the back. However, he looked tired in the second half, and I am not surprised that he was taken off.
Dublin said about Evans on BBC Sport after he was taken off: “Jonny Evans has had a good game today, an old head on old shoulders! He knows the game well and he has done brilliantly.”
My View: Manchester United should not be too downbeat
In my opinion, Manchester United should not be too disappointed at losing to Manchester City.
City have arguably the strongest team in the Premier League and were favourites to win the Manchester derby.
That United did not concede until the 56th minute shows how good they were at the back. Moreover, Haaland’s goal came in injury time.
The Red Devils are still very much in the race for the top four of the Premier League table this season.
