HERE WE GO: Arsenal completes the signing of £80m word class player,deal signed last night on a long term deal, Medical today as Club announcement will be done this morning – Arteta third signing confirmed
Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Tommy Setford from Ajax. The England youth international joins on a long-term deal following the purchase for under £1million football.london understands.
Setford has represented England at Under-16s, Under-17s, Under-18s and Under-19s levels while having also been called up to the Under-20s squad. A highly regarded modern goalkeeper, the club have sold the 18-year-old a pathway to convince him to leave a side in Ajax known for their push and development of youth stars.
Having featured in the UEFA Youth League for Ajax and at Under-18s level, even making their Under-21s bench on a couple occasions he joins Arsenal to replace the swathe of goalkeepers who were released at the end of last month. Five have departed and Setford becomes the second youth stopper to arrive after Lucas Nygaard.
Speaking about his move, Tommy said: “I want to thank Arsenal for this opportunity. I can’t wait to hit the ground running.
“I already know Ethan [Nwnaeri] and Myles [Lewis-Skelly]. They’re great guys and I can have a good laugh with them. I spent a few camps with them, so I know them well. I just saw them for a quick meet and greet!
“I’m looking forward to learning new things next season and pushing myself to another level. For the short term, it’s very important now to get a feel for the group and start to know everyone.”
He posted a goodbye message to his former club on Instagram. It read: “Thank you Ajax for more than 10 great years at the most beautiful club in the Netherlands.
“I take away with me some wonderful memories. No doubts our paths will cross once again sometime in the future”
