There’s an unusual amount of optimism surrounding Manchester United at the moment. After having won the FA Cup last season, and with an active start to the transfer window already under their belt, the Red Devils look as if they are once again intent on reestablishing themselves as a major contender in the Premier League next term.
Manager Erik ten Hag has, somewhat unexpectedly, been afforded the opportunity to prove his worth after a tricky campaign last time out, and the Dutchman will be hoping that with an injection of fresh talent, he can ease his side back into the Champions League picture.
But how exactly will United line up in the coming months? We’ve taken a look at their prospective starting XI, if they manage to land all of their reported transfer targets…
Andre Onana
The Cameroonian endured a mixed start to life in England last season, but statistically was one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, and will be looking to build on that platform again over the coming months.
Noussair Mazraoui
It had looked as if the Bayern Munich defender was on his way to West Ham, but alas, it would appear that United have swooped in to hijack the deal. Personal terms and a transfer fee have been agreed, and now we await his unveiling.
Matthijs de Ligt
Another Bayern defender on United’s radar, the Dutchman would represent a fine signing for Erik ten Hag’s side. The current understanding is that there is still some discrepancy between the two clubs’ valuations, but if a compromise can be found, De Ligt could be on his way to England.
Leny Yoro
The teenage defender chose United over the likes of Real Madrid, supposedly, and now the hope will be that he can show exactly why he was one of the most in-demand young talents in Europe.
Luke Shaw
Shaw spent so much of last season injured that he is going to feel like a new signing. After making his return to Euro 2024, the full-back should be good to go next month.
Kobbie Mainoo
This should be a huge campaign for United’s boy wonder. A sublime young midfielder, Mainoo has the world at his feet.
Manuel Ugarte
Seemingly surplus to requirements at Paris Saint-Germain, and frequently linked with Old Trafford in recent weeks, the Uruguayan would be a savvy solution to Ten Hag’s midfield concerns.
Bruno Fernandes
The main man. A reliable presence for United even when they are not at their best, and the fulcrum on which so much of their best work hinges. That will surely continue next season.
Pedro Neto
United are likely to be in the market for a new right winger this summer, and Neto has been linked with the Red Devils on more than one occasion. In an ideal world, Wolves will presumably want to keep hold of him over the coming weeks, but if the right offer comes in, it might be a decision that is taken out of their hands.
Rasmus Hojlund
While Joshua Zirkzee has arrived from Bologna, you would imagine that Hojlund will be the man to lead Ten Hag’s forward line into the new season. Whether that remains the case as the campaign progresses, only time will tell.
