Report: Club consider sacking 45-year-old because he wants to sell Arsenal & Leeds target
According to Eindhovens Dagblad, PSV Eindhoven are thinking about sacking John de Jong as he expresses a willingness to sell Arsenal and Leeds target Cody Gakp
Well, it was a tense summer for the Dutch side as Arsenal and Leeds both made attempts to sign their £43m talisman.
Victor Orta – Director of Football at Leeds – even travelled to the Netherlands on transfer deadline day to finalise a deal, only for negotiations to collapse.
That seems to have been due to a lack of communication at PSV Eindhoven, with De Jong – Director of Football for the Eredivisie outfit – now facing the sack after being among those open to selling Gakpo.
Eindhovens Dagblad explain how PSV Eindhoven feel they are stagnating under the 45-year-old Technical Director, and are thinking about parting ways with him – his openness to selling Gakpo has not helped his case.
Frank Arnesen is already being lined up as a replacement.
Interest in Gakpo comes after he scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions last season.
The 23-year-old has continued his fine form in the current campaign, scoring nine goals in just 12 games, while also registering six assists.
If PSV Eindhoven are seriously thinking about sacking De Jong because he was willing to sell Gakpo, it suggests the Dutch side certainly won’t make it easy to sign the Netherlands international.
If they do hand the Dutchman his P45 and fire him, we would presume that PSV Eindhoven will hire someone intent on keeping Gakpo in the Netherlands for as long as possible.
The bad news continues for Arsenal and Leeds, as some are expecting Gakpo to emerge as one of the stars of the World Cup in November.
If that happens, his price tag could even double, so it’s possible that Mikel Arteta and Jesse Marsch have already missed the boat with this one – only time will tell where the PSV Eindhoven No.11 ends up.
