Man United gave an encouraging performance against Man City in the Community Shield this afternoon, drawing 1-1 before a penalty shootout defeat.
Andre Onana – Wasn’t tested in the 90 minutes. His passing was hit and miss. Made one decent penalty save. 6/10
Diogo Dalot – A pretty good right-back performance defensively. Dealt with Doku well. I’d like to see him further up the field when United are in possession. Scored his penalty. 6/10
Harry Maguire – Seemingly not fully fit after only just recovering from a knock. Soldiered on for the better part of an hour. 6/10
Jonny Evans – Played the full 90 amid an injury crisis. Kept Haaland quiet. Won plenty of headers. Scooped his spot-kick over the bar.
Lisandro Martinez – Started at left-back which is far from ideal. Offered little threat going forward but was excellent defensively. Scored his pen. 7/10
Casemiro – His best display over the last few weeks. Looked pretty solid throughout. Was good with the ball at feet. Also tucked his penalty away. 7/10
Kobbie Mainoo – His first minutes of the season. Only lasted an hour but it was steady enough from the Englishman. 6/10
Bruno Fernandes – Was at the heart of everything good about United’s attacking play. Scored a worldie that was ruled out for offside. Created loads of chances. Scored his penalty. 8/10
Mason Mount – Energetic. Worked hard for the cause. Drifted all over the field to try get involved. He was decent. 5/10
Amad – A constant threat when in possession. Always direct and gave the City defenders a real tough afternoon. Was involved in some wonderful link-up play. 7/10
Marcus Rashford – Missed a couple of really good opportunities to score. Worked hard on both sides of the ball. 6/10
Subs:
Alejandro Garnacho – Scored a lovely goal to set United on their way. Always looked to attack. Scored his pen.
Jadon Sancho – Came on to freshen things up but wasn’t really involved. Missed his spot-kick.
Facundo Pellistri – Was culpable for the Bernardo equaliser due to poor defending at the back post.
Scott McTominay – Scored his penalty emphatically.
Toby Collyer – Neat and tidy.
