Why Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard avoids a Premier League ban despite Man City red card
Leandro Trossard was sent off in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Sunday, but he will not miss any further Premier League action.
The Belgian was shown two yellow cards in the first half of the feisty clash at the Etihad, the second for kicking the ball away after fouling Bernardo Silva just before the interval.
The Arsenal players and manager Mikel Arteta were fuming with the decision but Trossard was given his marching orders and they faced the rest of the contest with 10 men.
The 29-year-old does receive a ban for being shown a red card, but it is just for one game and applies to any domestic competition.
Arsenal host Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night and Trossard will be suspended for that match.
He will then be available for the Gunners’ Premier League outing at home to Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.
Arteta was left stewing about the red card, which came three weeks after Declan Rice was sent off after a second booking for delaying a restart against Brighton.
The Spaniard was trying to contain his frustration, but said he expects to see a lot more red cards to come if the rules are applied consistently.
‘It’s that obvious that it’s not necessary for me to comment,’ Arteta said. ‘It’s the second time. I’m expecting 100 Premier League games to be played as 10 against 11, or 10 against nine. Let’s see.’
He added: ‘I think it is very obvious what people think of the red card. It is not my job to come here and judge what happened. My job is to survive in one of the most difficult environments there is in football for 55 minutes and try to get things done to survive.
‘It has already happened twice in five games which is very worrying to see in the best league.’
