£45m Arsenal star a priority transfer target for Barcelona
Barcelona have reportedly identified a £45m Arsenal star as their priority transfer target for next summer’s transfer window.
Spanish giants FC Barcelona have reportedly made an important Arsenal star their priority transfer target ahead of the 2025 summer transfer window.
Reports have emerged suggesting that Barcelona will look to take action over their rumoured long-standing interest in Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, who has been heavily rumoured to be heading towards an exit from the club in recent months.
The Ghanaian international’s contract with Arsenal is due to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season meaning that, as it stands, he would be able to agree a free transfer with Barcelona in January, when his deal will enter its last six months, although the move would not be completed until next summer.
Partey joined Arsenal in the summer of 2020 after the Gunners activated the £45m (€54m) release clause that was included in his contract with La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid – making him the most Mikel Arteta’s most expensive signing as Arsenal manager at the time.
Ahead of the 2024/25 season, many had expected Partey to play a reduced role for Arsenal but, after new signing Mikel Merino suffered a shoulder fracture during his first training session – after a collision with Gabriel Magalhães – Partey once again became a mainstay in the starting XI.
After starting all seven of the Gunners’ opening Premier League games so far this season, there had been reports in the last few weeks that Arsenal are keen to offer Partey a contract extension, though it remains to be seen if such a situation will materialise.
Speaking previously on his Arsenal future, after rumours with a transfer away from the club, Partey said: “My head is always here [at Arsenal]. This is where I choose to play, I’m really happy every time I’m on the field. I know a lot of speculation has been going on, but for me, I’m really happy to be here and to continue playing for this club.
“With my contract, I still have to the end of the season, I think. I have to do my best and try to perform at the highest level and I think the most important is to be available every time.”
