Arsenal returned to Premier League action at the Emirates Stadium as they took on Nottingham Forest, and there were a number of surprises heading into the game.
Declan Rice was left on the bench with Arsenal being cautious over his fitness, whilst Mikel Arteta surprisingly dropped Thomas Partey, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli.
Arsenal started well as Jurrien Timber found the back of the net early on, but his goal was disallowed as Mikel Merino was deemed to be in an offside position.
Bukayo Saka opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a venomous strike after beating three players in the box, before Partey doubled the lead with an outstanding finish at the start of the second half.
Ethan Nwaneri then came on as a substitute and made it 3-0 with his first Premier League goal, in a truly special moment.
Here’s how we rated the Arsenal players after a much-needed win at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal player ratings vs Nottingham Forest
David Raya – 7
Confident in the air and with the ball at his feet. Had little to do in terms of saving shots but was quick off his line when needed.
Jurrien Timber – 8
Pounced well on an early chance to finish but his strike was disallowed. Pushed forward superbly to link up well with Saka and Martin Odegaard.
William Saliba – 7
Well composed on the ball and battled well with Forest’s attackers. Worked well in tandem with Gabriel Magalhaes to sweep up any threat in behind.
Gabriel Magalhaes – 7
Strong overall as he faced the difficult physical threat of Taiwo Awoniyi. Lost one key duel in the first half but otherwise solid.
Riccardo Calafiori – 7
Tidy display on his return from injury. Rarely beaten and didn’t put a foot wrong before being substituted in the 66th minute.
Jorginho – 8
Jorginho came off at half time as a result of a yellow card, but his overall display was excellent. Intelligent passing helped Arsenal push forward, and he kept things ticking in the middle of the park.
Mikel Merino – 7
Marginally offside with a header to set up Timber’s disallowed goal. Tidy overall and Merino’s physicality helped Arsenal’s high pressing.
Martin Odegaard – 9
Martin Odegaard is back from injury and back among the assists, with some nice link-up play to set up Saka’s opening goal. Ran the show with a truly classy display. Substituted to a standing ovation.
Bukayo Saka – 9
Saka scored with an incredible strike to open the scoring, beating three players in the box before smashing home. A threatening display overall, and Saka’s link-up play with Odegaard was particularly pleasing.
Gabriel Jesus – 7
Gabriel Jesus came into the game on the back of a lot of criticism, but delivered a strong display upfront. His movement helped Arsenal attack with a lot more fluidity than seen in recent weeks. Just lacked a goal.
Leandro Trossard – 8
Leandro Trossard was heavily criticised in recent weeks, but he silenced them with a much-improved display on the left wing. Occasionally pulled off nice bits of skill, and tucked inside well to help in attack. Missed a big chance early on in an otherwise strong performance.
