‘I was’: 24-year-old Arsenal player admits his passing was terrible against Leeds, he kept ‘shanking’ it
Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has admitted he was really unhappy with his passing aginst Leeds United yesterday.
Ramsdale was speaking to Arsenal’s official website after a hard fought 1-0 win at Elland Road.
The three-capped England international was in impressive form between the sticks yesterday.
He had to make a number of vital saves to maintain Arsenal’s narrow lead.
Patrick Bamford had the perfect opportunity to level the scores from the penalty spot.
But he has his effort sail past Ramsdale’s left-hand post, although the keeper guessed the right way.
Ramsdale was unhappy with his passing after the match, and thought the whole team struggled to keep the ball.
However, he praised the defensive effort from all of his teammates as they maintained their unlikely title charge.
Ramsdale unhappy with passing against Leeds
Ramsdale commented on his performance after the match, saying: “Of course, we all want to win 3-0 each week passing the ball but we found a way to win today and that’s the most important thing.
“Collectively, I was shanking balls left, right and centre, Bukayo (Saka) got a goal, but we couldn’t get him into the game, we were just losing duels.
“From back to front, the whole game, we were outstanding defensively.”
Ramsdale’s passing numbers weren’t as bad as the English goalkeeper was making out.
He played 25 accurate passes out of a possible 39, with a success rate of 64% (all stats via Sofascore).
This is higher than his season average pass completion rate of 60%.
However, yesterday just six of his 20 attempted long-range passes found a teammate, which contributed to the pressure Arsenal were put under.
Ramsdale admitted after the game that he still felt sick after a save he made during the match.
However, he was seen punching the air and celebrating wildly at full-time, much to the annoyance of Leeds fans.
The 24-year-old sets very high standards for himself, especially in terms of his distribution.
Ramsdale may have been unhappy with his passing, but Mikel Arteta would have been delighted with his clean sheet at the end of the match
