Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has reiterated the team’s determination to stay in the Premier League title race despite a frustrating 2-2 draw against Aston Villa that left them six points behind league leaders Liverpool.
The Gunners, fresh off a morale-boosting north London derby victory over Tottenham, looked poised to capitalise on their momentum. Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring at the Emirates, and Kai Havertz added a second early in the second half, putting Mikel Arteta’s side in control.
However, Aston Villa staged a spirited comeback with goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins to level the match. Arsenal thought they had secured a dramatic late winner through Mikel Merino, but VAR overturned the goal after replays revealed the ball had deflected off Havertz’s arm.
The result marked another missed opportunity for Arsenal to close the gap at the top of the table, as Liverpool managed to secure a late 2-0 victory over Brentford.
Despite facing criticism for his role in Villa’s equaliser, Partey emphasised the team’s resilience and belief in their ability to challenge for the title.
“You always want to be at the top, so we continue to look at the teams ahead of us,” Partey said. “But the main focus is to believe in ourselves, improve, and win our games. The mentality of everyone—from the fans to the players and the coach—is clear. We want to be the best, and we will keep fighting to get there.”
The Ghanaian midfielder acknowledged the competition in the league but maintained that Arsenal must concentrate on their own performances. “There are a lot of teams chasing the title. We have to focus on ourselves and make sure we win our games.”
When asked if he followed Liverpool’s late win over Brentford, Partey admitted he learned of the result afterward. “Every individual is free to watch other games, but for us, the priority is to dominate our own matches and secure wins.”
Partey also praised his teammates for their efforts and consistency. “I’m proud of the team. We’re dominating games, and we’re consistent. If we keep this up, the results will come.”
Arsenal’s draw with Villa means they have dropped crucial points from a winning position for the second time this season. With the title race heating up, Arteta’s side will need to rediscover their clinical edge to stay in contention.
