BREAKING NEWS: Manchester United Europa League quarter Final opponent REVEALED after latest DRAW conducted this morning – As Ruben Amorim team set to face the most in form team in the Europa league now that could eliminate them early from the competition
Manchester United and Tottenham can either face Real Sociedad or AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League round of 16.
In January, both United and Spurs secured their place in the last 16 by finishing in the top eight of the initial league phase. Six more teams joined them, with the remaining eight decided via the play-offs which were completed on Thursday
Due to finishing one place apart, the two Premier League clubs were handed the same potential opponents; Real Sociedad, Midtjylland, AZ Alkmaar or Galatasaray
Dutch side Alkmaar were first to win their play-off tie, beating Turkish giants Galatasaray 6-3 on aggregate in one of Thursday’s early kick-offs. Later in the night, Real Sociedad booked their ticket to round of 16 by also fending off Midtjylland 7-3 on aggregate.
A draw will take at 12pm on Friday to determine which one of the two teams United and Tottenham will each play over two legs next month. The nature of this year’s new format for the Europa League means that the Red Devils and Spurs can’t face each other until a potential all-English final in May.
United last faced Real Sociedad on their way to losing the 2021 Europa League final and last played Alkmaar during the group stage in 2019. Tottenham, meanwhile, beat Alkmaar 1-0 in October thanks to a Richarlison penalty but haven’t faced Real Sociedad in a competitive match in their history.
The round-of-16 first legs will take place on Thursday, March 6, with the second legs to be played a week later.
