Manchester United are aiming to build on their chaotic European victory over Lyon when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Red Devils produced an astonishing turnaround during their topsy-turvy Europa League quarter-final second leg with the French side, scoring three quick-fire goals at the end of extra-time to avoid embarrassment against their ten-man visitors. Their late comeback has booked them a clash with Athletic Club in the semi-finals as they chase continental salvation at the end of a miserable season.
Perhaps the midweek triumph can prove a turning point for Ruben Amorim’s side but there have been plenty of false dawns for United across the campaign. They could come crashing back down to earth this weekend against one of the Premier League’s most in-form sides.
Wolves have been in exceptional form over recent weeks and sit second in the table based on results across their past five matches. They have won four Premier League matches on the spin and can do the double over United with three points at Old Trafford on Sunday. Victory would also secure the Old Gold their place in the top flight for next season providing Ipswich Town fail to beat Arsenal this weekend.
United continue to struggle with injuries and will be without a host of players for Wolves’ visit. Joshua Zirkzee is out for the season and is joined in the treatment room by Amad Diallo, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Toby Collyer.
Ayden Heaven missed the nine-goal thriller with Lyon due to a knock but could return this weekend, while Amorim has confirmed that Noussair Mazraoui and Victor Lindelof are available for Sunday despite struggling with “personal issues” on Thursday.
Amorim could make changes from an exhausting midweek tie given United have nothing to play for in the Premier League but pride, with fringe players like Christian Eriksen and Lindelof potentially coming into the XI.
