Arsenal are the leading candidates to sign Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres this summer.
The Gunners are planning to bolster their frontline ahead of next season. A marquee striker is the number one priority for the London giants.
The club have been heavily linked with Sporting CP’s Gyokeres over the past few weeks, and A Bola (page 9) claim that a deal is on the cards.
Arsenal remain the ‘main candidates’ to sign the 26-year-old, and a move will ‘start to take shape’ after the Portuguese Cup final between Sporting CP and Benfica on Sunday.
Arsenal in pole position to land Gyokeres
The Sweden international has been superb for Sporting CP this campaign, registering 53 goals and 13 assists from just 51 appearances.
He has eclipsed his 58 goal contributions from last season, and is now poised to pursue a bigger challenge away from the Portuguese giants.
Arsenal have already offered a long-term contract to Gyokeres, but they have not made a formal offer yet, with Sporting CP still vying for silverware.
As A Bola highlight, the Gunners could make a formal bid for the striker after the Portuguese Cup final on May 25, which means from Monday onwards.
Gyokeres has a gentleman’s agreement to leave Sporting CP for £55 million. Arsenal could have a free run at signing him with United’s Europa League setback tonight.
There were claims that Gyokeres could consider a move to United if they qualify for the Champions League.
That route has been closed after their 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
Gyokeres would be a big striking upgrade for Arsenal, who have lacked sufficient firepower from the centre-forward department over a number of seasons.
The former Coventry City striker has converted 28 percent of his shots into goals this term. He has also caught the eye with his link-up play and quick dribbling skills.
Gyokeres will face a sterner challenge at Arsenal. He won’t have the same freedom to counter-attack and his credentials could be tested against low-block defences.
Arsenal are already preparing to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. Portuguese outlets seem to suggest that Gyokeres could become the second major summer signing for the Gunners.
