Viktor Gyokeres has revealed he prefers Lisbon to London after being linked with a summer transfer to Arsenal and Manchester United. The Sporting CP goal-scoring phenom, 26, has developed into one of the most highly-rated forwards in Europe over the past two seasons.
Since arriving in Portugal, Gyokeres has netted 96 goals in 101 appearances, drawing attention from Premier League giants Arsenal and United. The Red Devils were initially believed to be the frontrunners in the race to secure the Swede’s signature due to his close relationship with their head coach and former Sporting boss, Ruben Amorim.
It is understood that the Gunners have since emerged as the more attractive destination due to their Champions League qualification and upward trajectory compared to the Red Devils. New sporting director Andrea Berta is also a big fan of the forward.
Mirror Football reported this week that the north Londoners are still yet to decide whether they want the £60million-rated Gyokeres to lead their front line next season. Manager Mikel Arteta is also eyeing Benjamin Sesko. But Gyokeres himself has now potentially made Arsenal’s minds up for them
Hoping to bait him into revealing his plans ahead of the summer transfer window, Portuguese outlet A Bola asked Gyokeres whether he prefers London or Lisbon.
He replied: “I prefer Lisbon because I live here now. And yes, I like living here,” indicating that his future lies in the Portuguese capital or merely that he’s reluctant to give anything away.
It comes after the former Coventry City star’s uncle, Chris, recently claimed that Gyokeres and his family had decided in a meeting that he would not leave this summer.
Wearing a Sporting scarf and jersey on the same day that Gyokeres scored to hand Sporting the title, he began by saying: “I’m super happy, this is amazing. We were here last year, it’s the same spirit, the same people, the same atmosphere. Absolutely fantastic! Beyond words!”
Chris went on to say that his family had already discussed Viktor’s transfer plans when asked if he felt they belonged at Sporting: “Yes, very much… yesterday at dinner we decided that he has to stay.”
And when asked whether Gyokeres will stay at the club this summer, he replied: “Yes, we think so.”
Gyokeres himself has now played down those comments by stating he is yet to decide who he will play for next season. He said about his family: “They really like Portugal; I think they want to be here and enjoy the city, the good weather, and all the atmosphere.
