ATH BIBAO have provided a firm update on the future of Arsenal target Nico Williams, as speculation continues to swirl around the Spain international’s next move. The 22-year-old winger, who starred in Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 campaign, has long been admired by Gunners boss Mikel Arteta as the North London club seeks to strengthen its attacking options.

Despite mounting interest from top European clubs, including Arsenal and Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao remain optimistic about keeping their prized asset. Speaking to El Correo, club president Jon Uriarte expressed confidence in the club’s project and Williams’ place within it.

“I believe we have a winning and interesting project for everyone, and Nico Williams is part of that project, just like many other players,” Uriarte said. “The project becomes easier if we keep our players and I believe Nico and the rest of the squad have a very exciting year ahead

Uriarte’s comments follow reports that Bilbao are attempting to persuade Williams to sign a new deal, despite his current contract running until 2027. The existing deal includes a release clause believed to be in the region of £50 million, a fee well within reach for several Premier League clubs.

However, Williams’ wage demands have emerged as a significant stumbling block. Reports suggest the winger is seeking a salary in excess of £300,000 per week, a figure that would place him among the highest earners in European football.

Barcelona, who have also expressed strong interest in Nico Williams, are reportedly unable to meet those demands due to ongoing financial restrictions.

With Nico Williams potentially staying at San Mamés, Arsenal may have to weigh up their options carefully as they continue to explore elite-level reinforcements for the 2025/26 campaign. Arteta’s desire to add dynamic wide players remains clear, but any move for Williams now appears far from straightforward.
