Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Brentford captain Christian Norgaard, with reports confirming the Denmark international has been granted permission to undergo a medical ahead of a move to the Emirates Stadium.
The transfer, part of a proactive summer window for Mikel Arteta’s side, comes in response to looming midfield departures and underlines the club’s intent to reinforce with proven Premier League experience ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
According to reputable sources including Sky Sports and BBC Sport, Arsenal have reached an agreement with Brentford for the 31-year-old midfielder. The deal is expected to be worth an initial £10 million, rising to £15 million with performance-based add-ons.
Norgaard has been a central figure in Brentford’s rise since joining in 2020 and playing a pivotal role in their promotion to the Premier League. He is viewed by Arsenal as a direct replacement for Thomas Partey, whose contract expires in June 2025 and remains unsigned. The Gunners also lost Jorginho to Flamengo earlier this month, further highlighting the need for experienced reinforcements in midfield.
A composed and combative presence, Norgaard has made 192 appearances for Brentford, contributing 13 goals and 11 assists. His 2024/25 Premier League campaign was particularly impressive, registering five goals and four assists in 34 appearances—underscoring his dual ability to break up play and contribute in attack, particularly from set pieces.
Manager Mikel Arteta reportedly views the Dane as a “sensible signing” to complement incoming Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. Former coach Edu Rubio has also praised Norgaard’s leadership and tactical intelligence, suggesting he can rival Partey in terms of consistency and composure in high-stakes matches.
The move has also been shaped by recent turbulence at Brentford, following manager Thomas Frank’s departure to Tottenham Hotspur and growing interest in several key players. Norgaard, currently in Denmark for the birth of his child, is understood to be enthusiastic about the transfer, motivated by the opportunity to play UEFA Champions League football and compete for major honours.
Personal terms have reportedly been agreed, and the medical is scheduled to take place in the coming days. If all goes according to plan, Norgaard will become Arsenal’s third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Martin Zubimendi (£51 million) and Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5 million).
