After signing Noni Madueke from Chelsea, Arsenal will continue to look to strengthen their attack in the coming weeks.

Despite many good performances under Mikel Arteta last season, Arsenal came up short in the title race and in cup competitions partly owing to their efforts up top.

Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz’s lengthy injuries certainly didn’t help in that regard, but even with both fit, Arsenal have lacked some inspiration in attack at times.

And whilst Noni Madueke will hope to provide some of that himself, Arsenal are also in the market for a new number 10, someone who can also operate on the left wing.

As a result, Arsenal are interested in Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace, however, a name from the past is now being linked with the Gunners once again.

Over the last year or so, Arsenal have been consistently linked with Xavi Simons at RB Leipzig, a 22-year-old with rich potential.

And journalist Fabrizio Romano has now shared the latest on Arsenal’s Xavi Simons pursuit over on his YouTube channel.

Madueke used to be close teammates with Simons back at PSV Eindhoven a few years ago, a duo who also seemed to be very good friends away from the pitch.

And whilst Arsenal are not pushing to sign Simons just yet, Romano thought the Dutch international might prevail as an Eze alternative should a deal not be agreed there.

Romano said: “Chelsea and Arsenal both asked for information about Xavi Simons in June already.

“At the moment there are still no direct negotiations with Leipzig — not for Chelsea, not for Arsenal, because both clubs are busy with different things

“For example, Chelsea are now busy with some of their outgoings, they’ve signed several players already, now it’s also going to be time for them to sell some players, for example, Renato Veiga — there is Atletico Madrid, and interest also from Bayern.

“But Simons is a player they really like, who they appreciate internally, so he remains an option for Chelsea.

“And then Arsenal, we know Eberechi Eze is one of the targets, they made contact with his agents more than two weeks ago.

“Let’s see what Arsenal will decide to do, at the moment, no contact with Crystal Palace yet, so we have to wait and see what happens there in case they can’t get Eze, Simons could be one of the options again.

“But also in this case it’s going to be important to see how Arsenal move in terms of some of the outgoings, Reiss Nelson and more players.”

Arsenal might be reluctant to negotiate with RB Leipzig after Benjamin Sesko
Earlier in the window it was reported that Leipzig want around €80m (£67m) for Simons, a similar figure to Eze’s release clause at Palace.

However, Arsenal might be much more inclined to enter negotiations with their London rivals rather than Leipzig, who stood frustratingly firm over Benjamin Sesko.

Arsenal walked away from Sesko negotiations given that they weren’t willing to pay Leipzig’s lofty price tag for the 22-year-old.

Of course, Arsenal have decided to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP instead, a deal that is taking some time to finalise.

But it seems unlikely that Arsenal would want to open negotiations again with Leipzig this summer, even if it were for a different player.

Therefore, Eze might still be favourite to join Arsenal as their new versatile attacker who can help out in several roles.
