Mark Clattenburg has settled the debate as to whether Bernardo Silva should have been given a red card in the Premier League fixture between Arsenal and Manchester City.
Arsenal and Manchester City ended all square, with Gabriel Martinelli rescuing a point for Mikel Arteta’s side in the dying embers.
Erling Haaland was the goalscorer from a Manchester City perspective, after the Norwegian powerhouse powered through the Arsenal defence after nine minutes.
But aside from this, not much happened, although there has been mass uproar from Arsenal fans about Bernardo Silva not being sent off.
What did Bernardo Silva do to potentially get a red card?
Silva was on a yellow after a rash challenge from the Portuguese international, and then had a few more little niggles, so he was delivered a warning by Stuart Attwell.
However, after a scuffle with Leandro Trossard, he proceeded to throw the ball at the Belgian’s head, yet no second yellow was given.
This caused uproar on socials – but should it have? Mark Clattenburg delivers his verdict.
What did Mark Clattenburg think of the incident?
Speaking exclusively to TBR Football, Clattenburg revealed his thoughts on the Silva incident.
He said: “Some people are asking why Bernardo Silva did not receive a second yellow card for throwing the ball at Leandro Trossard
“Silva throws the ball back to Trossard, who has his head low after stretching after the ball had previously hit him in the stomach.
“There was no malice or violence used in the act of throwing the ball, and Silva was merely returning the ball.
“This situation was well managed by the referee, Stuart Attwell, and he spoke with both players before the match continued. I would have been surprised if a yellow card was shown for this offence.”
Debate settled – Clattenburg says Silva would have been unlucky to have been sent off for his actions.
