Manchester United have a big decision to make regarding the future of Ruben Amorim. His switch to Old Trafford hasn’t gone to plan and his side are struggling for results. The former Sporting Lisbon man was picked as their replacement for Erik ten Hag during last season but he hasn’t been able to make the impact he would have wanted to.
The Red Devils lost 3-1 away at Brentford over the weekend to heap more pressure on their head coach. They find themselves sat down in 14th place in the table after their first six league fixtures. The North West sleeping giants were also dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby Town.
Manchester United’s next manager choice should be obvious
United have been linked with a move for Sir Gareth Southgate, as per a report by talkSPORT. The 55-year-old is available following his exit from the England national team. He did an impressive job with the Three Lions and guided them to two major finals.
However, the Red Devils should opt against him and try and get Oliver Glasner from Crystal Palace instead. The Austrian has worked wonders since his move to Selhurst Park in February 2024. The Eagles are likely to face a battle to keep him in South Yorkshire amid expected attention from elsewhere.
Glasner, 51, arrived in England with his current club struggling for form. He subsequently steadied the ship and gradually put his own stamp on the squad. The Schärding-born man then guided them to their first ever major trophy back in May after they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final against the odds at Wembley.
Crystal Palace are now balancing their domestic duties with life in the Europa Conference League. Despite their increased workload and losing key man Eberechi Eze to Arsenal in the last window, they have made an impressive start to the new season. They are positioned in 3rd place in the table and are only three points behind league leaders Liverpool.
Why Oliver Glasner would suit Manchester United?
Glasner’s Crystal Palace side are well drilled and tough to break down, which are two things United aren’t. The Red Devils need someone to come in and sort their defence out. They leak too many goals under Amorim and must tighten things up at the back if they are to climb up the division.
The ex-defender spent his entire playing career in his native Austria. He made over 500 appearances for SV Ried. He was also loaned out to LASK to get some game time before he eventually hung up his boots in 2011.
Glasner has since delved into the managerial world and had early spells at Ried, LASK and Wolfsburg before Eintracht Frankfurt took a gamble on him in 2021. He ended up becoming a hit during his time with the Bundesliga outfit. They won the Europa League in 2022 after beating Rangers in the final in Seville on penalties.
His appointment at Crystal Palace didn’t go down too well at the time though. Though who don’t pay too much attention to German football may have questioned his lack of experience in England. However, he has since boosted his reputation in the game and is one of the most sought after coaches in the league right now.
Southgate would be a controversial appointment by United if they went for him, despite his success with England. The Red Devils should swerve him for now and go for a safer option like Glasner instead. If they managed to lure him up north, it would go down well with supporters amid his eye-catching work with the Eagles and should boost their supporters’ spirits.
Crystal Palace will inevitably lose the likes of Adam Wharton and Marc Guehi down the line. The latter is out of contract next June. Therefore, Glasner should start thinking about his potential next move whilst his stock is still high.
