Manchester United were strongly linked to Aaron Anselmino when he was at Boca Juniors, only for the defender to sign for Chelsea.
One of Ineos’ early priorities at Manchester United was to add youth in defence. A statement move for Leny Yoro landed the elite prospect they wanted.
United also signed Ayden Heaven in January 2025, adding a potential top level talent into the mix, with Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans released.
One young prospect Manchester United were linked with signing in 2024 was Aaron Anselmino.
Anselmino ended up signing for Chelsea – but has barely been seen for them.
Manchester United wanted Aaron Anselmino
Manchester United were first linked to Aaron Anselmino in January 2024, after he broke into the Boca Juniors first team.
He was playing alongside Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo and Edinson Cavani at 19, even featuring as a starter in the Copa Libertadores.
However, Chelsea pushed hardest to sign Anselmino, agreeing a £15 million deal with Boca Juniors in 2024.
As part of their agreement they loaned Anselmino straight back to Boca Juniors
At the end of their season, Chelsea invited Anselmino to be part of their Club World Cup squad in the USA in the summer, where Boca were also competing.
Anselmino made one two-minute substitute appearance in a round-of-16 games against Benfica.
Anselmino snubbed from Chelsea’s Premier League efforts
Despite Chelsea being light in defence, they did not consider Aaron Anselmino to be the right fit for their Premier League squad this season.
Anselmino was sent out on another loan, signing for German club Borussia Dortmund.
However, he has only played in two games to date, after missing time with an injury.
Would the 20-year-old be better off having signed for Manchester United? It’s too early to say, but if he had joined, then he would at least now be part of the squad and adapting to the Premier League.
Chelsea are taking the strategic view that Anselmino will benefit long-term from playing time in Germany, and you could argue this is smart, with Ayden Heaven spending his season warming the bench
