‘My current understanding’: Arsenal could have to pay £35m to sign ‘relentless’ midfielder in January – Romano

Arsenal will already have one eye on the January transfer window as they look to consolidate their brilliant start to the season.

It’s no secret that Mikel Arteta wanted to add another central midfielder to his squad in the summer.

And speaking to Caught Offside, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on one of their potential targets.

There were two players Arsenal made a real efort to sign in the last window.

Brazilians Douglas Luiz and Danilo were both linked with a move, but neither player ended up at The Emirates.

There’s talk that Arsenal could move for Danilo in the next few months, but his release clause is £86m.

Romano has now provided an update on a player who could be available for a much dearer fee.

The reliable journalist believes that Lens midfielder Seko Fofana could be available for £35m.

He believes that both Arsenal and Liverpool are interested in the 27-year-old midfielder and he could move in January.Arsenal target Fofana available for £35m

Romano provided the following update on the Ivorian international: “I don’t know yet where he’ll end up, but I can give my current understanding of his situation.

“Seko Fofana has new agent now and he’s obviously working to find solutions for 2023.

“At the moment it is still early, nothing advanced; but he can be an opportunity not just for Premier League clubs, also in other leagues

“His price tag could be around €40m (£35m).”

The ‘relentless’ midfielder is no stranger to playing in England.

Fofana came through Manchester City’s academy and spent a successful season on loan at Fulham in the Championship.

Fofana mainly plays as an eight, and would provide important competition for Granit Xhaka.

He’s a fantastic passer and dribbler, and scored eight league goals last season.

If Fofana is available for £35m, it would represent a very tempting deal for Arsenal.

Being able to sign a midfielder at his peak for that price is a very good opportunity for the Gunners.

Given the lack of depth Arsenal currently have in midfield, Fofana could end up being a fantastic signing
