Alarm bells were already ringing last summer when Fernandes came close to leaving for the Saudi Pro League and he hardly eased United’s nerves when he spoke about that situation in a recent interview.
The 31-year-old said: “From the club I felt it was, ‘If you go it’s not so bad for us’. It hurts me a bit. More than hurting me, it makes me sad. I’m a player that no-one can criticise, I’m always available, I always give my best.”
Almost a year on and under yet another new manager, those at Old Trafford must avoid facing a similar situation with their star man, who is also their second-highest earner at £300,000-a-week.
