Manchester United sit 5th in the Premier League after they defeated Man City 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. Michael Carrick began his second reign as head coach with an emphatic victory as Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu scored to secure a thoroughly deserved three points at Old Trafford.
It was a euphoric afternoon for United and the only complaint is that they didn’t win by a larger margin. Carrick’s side saw three goals disallowed for offside, while they also hit the woodwork through both Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo.
United set the target of a top-six finish at the start of the campaign, but remain hopeful they could secure Champions League qualification under Carrick. A top-four finish would guarantee a place in the top continental club competition, while a fifth-place finish would also likely be enough due to the Uefa coefficient rankings.
Manchester United next five fixtures
Manchester United are back in action when they travel to face league leaders Arsenal in the Premier League next weekend. It is an incredibly difficult start to life for Michael Carrick in his head coach role after it began against Man City on Saturday lunchtime.
United follow up their trip to Arsenal with home matches against Fulham on Sunday 1 February and Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday 7 February. Carrick then faces away trips to face West Ham on Tuesday 10 February and Everton on Monday 23 February.
United targeted a top six finish in the Premier League this season and sources claim they sacked Ruben Amorim due to a lack of ‘evolution and progress’ this campaign. Carrick was coy when asked what his target was during his role as head coach, but it is understood United still believe they can qualify for the Champions League.
