The Red Devils made a flying start, with Casemiro smashing home the opener in the 11th minute.
Brentford responded impressively and arguably should have levelled the score, but their wastefulness in front of goal proved costly.
Benjamin Sesko then showed superb composure inside the box to net his 10th goal of the season just before half-time.
Carrick made a tactical change which brought much-needed control and ensured the game no longer resembled a basketball match.
The Bees eventually grabbed a consolation goal in the 87th minute, but it was the hosts who held firm to claim all three points.
United are now just one victory away from sealing their return to the UEFA Champions League.

Quickly came out of his line to deny Michael Kayode and then made another superb save to save a certain Ayden Heaven own goal. Unlucky to not keep a clean sheet.
Diogo Dalot – 7/10
Produced a much-improved display after the break when tasked with shutting down Keane Lewis-Potter.
Harry Maguire – 7/10
His powerful header was cleared off the line by inches before he grabbed an assist just moments later. He could have defended better on a few occasions, but still made a positive impact overall.
Ayden Heaven – 6/10
He was caught out of position in the first half, but a slip from Thiago helped him off the hook.
Luke Shaw – 6/10
Made an unnecessary challenge that earned him an early booking, but he grew into the game as it progressed. Was eventually forced off in the second half due to injury.
Casemiro – 9/10
Scored his ninth goal of the season to get United off to the perfect start.
He failed to plug the gap between Dalot and Maguire at times in the first half, but he made amends with a series of crunching tackles and ultimately delivered a Man of the Match performance.
Kobbie Mainoo – 9/10
Started the game in blistering fashion, gliding past four players to set up Amad Diallo for what should have been the assist of the season.
His aggressive sliding tackles helped United win back possession on several occasions. A player reborn.
Bruno Fernandes – 8/10
Combined brilliantly with Bryan Mbeumo before playing a key role in the opening goal. Earned his 19th assist of the campaign with a perfectly-timed pass to Sesko.
Amad Diallo – 4/10
He denied Kobbie Mainoo what would have been the assist of the season with a poor finish. He then squandered another huge chance, wasting a brilliant delivery from Bruno Fernandes with a weak header.
Diallo eventually got the ball in the net, but only after straying miles offside. His contribution was important for the second goal.
Bryan Mbeumo – 7/10
Looked lively on the right flank and operated almost as a striker in the second half. A better first touch on a couple of occasions could have seen him score against his former club.
Benjamin Sesko – 8/10
The 22-year-old was relatively quiet in the first half but worked tirelessly throughout. He took his chance with aplomb to fire United into a 2-0 lead.
