Brazilian national media deliver very interesting verdicts on Gabriel Jesus’s substitute display last night
Arsenal fans were treated to a second World Cup cameo from forward Gabriel Jesus.
The 25-year-old was unable to displace Tottenham forward Richarlison in the starting line-up after his brace against Serbia.
However, Jesus made a 17-minute cameo against Switzerland, which the Brazilian media reacted to.
Richarlison was unable to replicate to make the same impact last night before being replaced by Jesus.
The Tottenham forward managed two shots, that were both blocked, before Tite substituted him.
Jesus didn’t fare any better in front of goal, failing to take a single shot, but did manage to play a key pass to Vinicius Jr.
He also won all five of his duels, helping his side go into the lead through Casemiro late on and then protecting their one-goal advantage.
Brazil are now safely through to the last-16 with a game in hand, and Tite could ring the changes against Cameroon.
This could give Jesus the chance to show he should be starting ahead of his north London rival for the knockout stages.
Brazilian media react to Jesus performance
Jesus had less than a quarter of the match to make an impact last night, and his ratings from the media reflect this.
Globo Esporte said, “5.5/10. There were few moments when the ball reached him, but he fought to recover the ball and open spaces in the Swiss area.
“He made a great counterattack with Vini Jr.”
Jogada10 gave Jesus a higher rating, but seemed less impressed with Jesus.
“6/10. He entered in place of Richarlison, but did little,” Jogada10 said.
“With the aerial plays, he did not stand out. I expected more.”
Finally, Correio Braziliense gave him his highest rating of 6.2, but once again was scathing of his cameo.
“Richarlison’s natural reserve, the [former] Manchester City striker did not fulfill the offensive role and did little to help in the victory,” the Brazilian publication said.
“Best participation was a pass to finish Vinicius Junior.”
Jesus was Brazil’s first-choice striker four years ago in Russia, but failed to live up to expectations.
He’s not been in the best form in front of goal for Arsenal recently, but his overall play has been very good.
It was only just before the tournament that his importance to the Gunners was compared to Kevin de Bruyne’s at Manchester City.
The Brazilian media are notoriously harsh with how they react to their players performances, as Jesus has discovered.
