‘Another great signing’: Pundit reacts as Arsenal reportedly set to swoop for ‘one of Europe’s top midfielders’ who could give Thomas Partey headache for starting spot
With the January transfer window looming, Arsenal are reportedly plotting a swoop for Youri Tielemans.
Links between the Gunners and the Leicester star are nothing new.
However, Tielemans’ contract expires in the summer, so this is the last chance the Foxes have of getting a fee for him.
With that in mind, Arsenal are now reportedly looking to make their final attempt to land Tielemans.
Earlier this week, The Mirror reported that the Gunners are ready to test Leicester’s resolve in January.
The article speculates that Arsenal could potentially pay £20million for Tielemans – half what he cost the Foxes in 2019.
Liverpool have also been linked with the Belgium international in recent weeks.
And Reds cult hero Jose Enrique has had his say on the prospect of Arsenal landing the World Cup ace.
He appeared to back the move, despite the prospect of Liverpool missing out on Tielemans in this case.
A no-brainer of a deal
Arsenal were tipped to move for Tielemans all summer, and it was surprising when this didn’t materialise.
The Gunners instead tried for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, but to no avail.
Perhaps Arsenal were plotting to pick Tielemans up for cheaper in January, with his contract on the verge of running out.
Arsenal could certainly do with some reinforcements to maintain their title and Europa League-chasing momentum.
And Tielemans – who Brendan Rodgers has deemed “one of Europe’s top midfielders” – would be a great fit for Mikel Arteta’s high-flying side.
At the same time, Arsenal will likely look for a winger – another position they failed to strengthen late on – and of course a new striker to cover for Gabriel Jesus.
Certainly a lot on the agenda for Edu and Arteta in January – let’s see how they fare.
