NEW DEAL: Arsenal open talks to sign Spain’s ‘fantastic’ World Cup star defender

Spanish outlet SPORT claim Arsenal and Newcastle have opened talks to sign Barcelona wonderkid Alex Balde after discussions over a new deal at the Nou Camp hit the skids – with Barcelona’s financial difficulties scuppering a deal.

Balde, 19, has broken into the Barcelona first team over the last 18 months – clocking up 26 senior appearances. Of those 26, 18 have come this season. Barca boss Xavi recently described the four-time Spain international as “fantastic”.

His contract is due to expire in the summer of 2024. Barcelona have been keen to hand him a new deal, which would have taken him to June 2027 – and with a release clause of £440million. However, those talks have been postponed.

Indeed, Barca’s financial difficulties mean a pay rise for Balde would have to wait until the summer. Even then, it might not materialise. That has not impressed Balde’s camp – with Balde currently represented by super agent Jorge Mendes.

That has led to interest rising in the young defender, who is a left-back but has been used on the right. SPORT claim Arsenal and Newcastle have opened talks with the player’s representatives over a possible move, to test the waters.

Balde is a serious talent. Seen by many as Jordi Alba’s long-term replacement, he has already broken into the Spain squad. All four of his caps came at the World Cup with Spain, starting against Japan in the 2-1 defeat in the groups.

It comes as little surprise that with his deal on hold, Premier League clubs are keen. Newcastle and Arsenal have the cash to tempt both Balde, and Mendes, into leaving his boyhood club. But if Barca can strike a deal, he will stay.

A move to England all depends on what Barcelona can do – or, promise Balde – over the next few weeks. If either Premier League side make a move this month remains to be seen. It is more likely a move is made in the summer.
