Michael Owen has shared that Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli is a player he really appreciates after he scored the winning goal during Arsenal’s 1-0 over Leicester City on Saturday.
The Brazil star, who had previously gone six games without a goal, has now netted in back-to-back matches and Owen added that he liked how Martinelli composed himself for his goal at the King Power Stadium.
It was possibly turning into one of those days again for Mikel Arteta’s men because the first half was goalless, but it wasn’t without its added drama.
The Premier League leaders had a Leandro Trossard goal ruled out for a foul on Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward, including Bukayo Saka not being awarded a penalty, which left Ian Wright fuming.
But, at the start of the second half, Martinelli showcased his magic, which left Owen impressed, as he told MatchDay Extra on Premier League Productions (25/02/23 at 10:20 pm).
“Martinelli is a player I really like,” said Owen. “He has great speed, but he has also shown that he can then slow himself down, think straight and it’s a lovely finish. He opens his body out.
“If anything goes wrong in that situation, then somebody taps it in at the far post.”
MARTINELLI TO HIT DOUBLE FIGURES?
The 21-year-old is one more strike away from hitting double figures for the first time in his career.
That’s nine goals in 24 games for the £6 million Edu Gaspar capture (Goal), and with 14 games of the season remaining, there’s no reason why he can’t aim for 15.
In truth, if he does hit those numbers, then it probably results in more winning goals and that all-important title heading to the Emirates for the first time in nearly two decades.
