West Ham table £6.9m bid for Arsenal star player to replace senior ace who is set to depart in the summer

West Ham United have tabled a £6.9m bid to sign Arsenal left-back Nuno Tavares to replace Aaron Cresswell at the London Stadium, according to A Bola.

Tavares has spent this season on loan at Ligue 1 giants Marseille where he has made 37 appearances, scoring six goals and impressing with his ability to get forward.

But after falling out with boss Igor Tudor and having no future at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta, the Hammers have moved to bring him to east London as a replacement for the ageing Cresswell.

“West Ham made a proposal to Arsenal to hire Nuno Tavares, a 23-year-old Portuguese left-back acquired by the Gunners from Benfica in 2021, for €8 million (£6.9m), found A BOLA,” they wrote (26 May).

“West Ham are looking to reinforce the left flank, where the starter is 33-year-old Cresswell.”

Versatile

Much like we have seen with Emerson Palmieri since his arrival at the London Stadium, David Moyes has got interest in playing wing-backs and full-backs.

Emerson has struggled to make a strong impact but he was a big part of the turn around in form recently, before Cresswell’s experience was preferred instead

But Tavares has a similar skillset to that of Emerson and it could be the case that Cresswell is moved on as he enters the final 12 months of his contract, and the Portuguese defender is allowed to compete for a starting place.

The mentioned fee is a good one as it won’t take a large chunk out of the budget and would allow us to bring a player in who has Premier League and European level experience while being young enough to continue improving.

Left-back is a clear area that needs to be improved upon this summer so it’s good to see the club moving early in the market, but whether or not this deal gets over the line remains to be seen. Hopefully he won’t be the only player joining from Arsenal.
