Agreement reached: Arsenal player ‘reaches agreement’ with La Liga club, awaits Arteta approval – agent reveals
Arsenal midfielder has “reached an agreement” to sign for La Liga side Valencia this summer, according to the player’s agent.
Torreira signed for Arsenal from Sampdoria. They paid £26m for him after he shone for Uraguay at the 2018 World Cup.
The centre-midfielder was relied upon by the Gunners to start with but he fell down the pecking order after Mikel Arteta replaced Unai Emery.
The 26-year-old has had spells on loan at Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina in recent seasons. He looked set to join the Italian side permanently this summer, but this transfer has fallen through.
His agent – Pablo Bentancur – has now revealed that they have an agreement in place to join Valencia:
“We have reached an agreement with Valencia, Gattuso wants him,” Pablo Bentancur said (as quoted by Fabrizio Romano).
“We are gonna discuss with Arsenal – Arteta wants to see him in the pre-season.
“He had great numbers with AFC but we’ve [got a] pre-agreement with Valencia”.
A report claimed earlier this week that the Gunners had offered £5.9m for the former Spain under-21 international with Arsenal seeing him as a possible replacement for Nuno Tavares.
First-choice left-back Kieran Tierney has struggled with injuries since arriving at the Emirates Stadium with the Scotland international making just 22 Premier League starts last campaign.
His replacement, Tavares, was criticised on a number of occasions for poor performances when filling in for Tierney and there are reports that Arsenal are looking to loan the Portuguese defender out.
That means the Gunners will need to bring in another left-back to cover and Grimaldo has been rumoured to be the man. However, former Portugal international Rui Costa claims that club have received no offers.
On Grimaldo, he said: “I’m going to talk to him now, see if he’s okay. Grimaldo is like all the other players, he is working.”
When asked specifically about interest from Arsenal, Rui Costa added: “You [the press] have been saying that. None of this came to me. I don’t know where that came from.”
