Match-winner Scott McTominay praised the performances of Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane following Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.
McTominay stepped off the bench to head home an 86th-minute winner and seal a third successive Premier League win for Erik ten Hag’s side. Douglas Luiz had earlier equalised for Villa, cancelling out Rasmus Hojlund’s first-half opener.
Despite starting on the front foot and taking a relatively early lead, United were under the cosh for much of the contest, with Villa overcoming a slow start to ramp up the pressure. The Reds, to their credit, stood firm for the most part, defending well as a collective unit.
And McTominay was only too happy to hail the performances of centre-backs Maguire and Varane, who started alongside each other in a Premier League fixture for the first time under Ten Hag.
“We started the game really, really well, I thought,” McTominay told Sky Sports. “Obviously they are a really, really good team with top players and they came back into the game and caused us problems.
“But it was a credit to the lads at the back, who were immense, to be fair, especially Harry and Raphael. It was a top-level performance and a deserved win in the end.”
Diogo Dalot also earned praise from McTominay, who has now scored eight goals in all competitions this season, for delivering a pinpoint cross to enable him to head home the winner with the clock ticking.
McTominay added: “It was an unbelievable cross, to be fair. It was whipped in with a lot of pace and I just needed to let it hit my head and make sure I got it on target and then it was a goal.
“Full credit to the boys. Attacking-wise, we created some good chances as well, which might have gone unnoticed.”
