‘Always fascinated me’: Carragher says he’s so interested in why £35m Arsenal player keeps getting picked
Jamie Carragher has given his view on Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka and why he keeps getting picked by Gunners managers.
Carragher did a Monday Night Football special with Mikel Arteta on Sky Sports and got the Spaniard’s views on Xhaka.
But he also gave his own opinion, looking in from the outside and said he was so interested in why managers kept picking the £35 million man.
Arsene Wenger signed him and Unai Emery stuck by Xhaka, who has been redeployed this season under Arteta, playing further forward.
Carragher on Xhaka
Carragher said: “He’s had a lot of criticism but what’s always fascinated me is that it wasn’t just you – it was Arsene Wenger.
“And every manager after him, every manager always picked him.
“I just thought he must have real leadership qualities, he must be a good guy around the place.”
There is a popular view that Xhaka was way off Arsenal standard in previous seasons and now he is getting huge acclaim for perceived improvement.
Actually, he was always a decent player for Arsenal but he frequently blotted his copybook with reckless tackles and a loss of discipline.
Now, he has cut those out and is catching the eye by scoring more goals and laying them on as Arsenal push for the title.
