“Arsenal were f00lish for selling him, they sold him for just £17M and now he has become the best player in the world and he’s at the top of the world”- Barcelona Legend Lionel Messi says player Arsenal sold for £17M in 2019 is now an absolute world class and has turned into a beast
There is always a story somewhere of Arsene Wenger trying to sign a player for Arsenal who turned out to be a superstar.
You have heard them all before. From Cristiano Ronaldo to a rumoured trial for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Lionel Messi can be added to that list because the legendary manager tried to bring him to Arsenal when Cesc Fabregas first joined the club back in 2005.
The rest is now history with Messi because he is regarded as one of the greatest of all time, if not the greatest to have ever done it.
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar perhaps swayed the opinion of people towards the current Inter Miami star because that was the icing on the cake for the forward and his incredible career.
Messi scored in every game bar one leading up to Argentina’s World Cup triumph and would then go on to win a record-breaking eighth Ballon d’Or.
Whilst a lot of eyes were on the world’s best, you can never forget the performances, especially in the final, of one Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa and previously Arsenal.
The 31-year-old moved to Villa Park back in 2020 from the Emirates and he had zero international caps to his name, at the time.
Fast forward to the present and Messi thinks he is now ‘the best goalkeeper in the world’, as he told ESPN Argentina.
Not only has Martinez won the World Cup, but he also was key in his nation winning the previous Copa America and Unai Emery’s side securing Champions League football this season.
Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal to best in the world
“For me, Dibu is the best goalkeeper in the world,” said Messi. “If he is not the best in the world, he is among the best, without a doubt. He has been demonstrating it in his club & the national team.
“He was key in his team & achieved the goal of entering the Champions League. I have no doubt that much of the credit is thanks to him.”
Emiliano Martinez was right to leave Arsenal
It was the best decision he made in his life and it’s a reason why he is now the best in the world.
Mikel Arteta decided to push for Bernd Leno, at the time, before replacing him with Aaron Ramsdale and now he has been pushed out for David Raya.
Arteta can’t stop changing his keepers and you feel he has to just stick with one eventually because it still hasn’t landed him the Premier League title.
But one thing can’t be argued is that, whether it’s Leno or now Raya, Villa’s man between the sticks is better than them all and his performances over the last few years have proven that.
