Arteta wants ‘special player’ and 27-year-old to leave Arsenal permanently – report

Goal claim Arsenal have added both Reiss Nelson and Alex Runarsson to the transfer list and want to sell the duo permanently this summer – after both spent the 2021-22 campaign out on loan.

The Gunners are set for a summer clearout with Goal also stating that the likes of Bernd Leno, Lucas Torreira and Pablo Mari could also leave the club. Nelson and Runarsson have been added to that list this summer.

Nelson, 22, got off to a slow start at Feyenoord last term but finally got going and finished the campaign, starting the Europa Conference League final. He played 32 times in all competitions, having a hand in 11 goals.

A midfielder once branded a “special player” by Mikel Arteta, he is in the final 12 months of his contract. Arsenal want to cash in on Nelson. As they do with Iceland goalkeeper Runarsson – who spent time on loan at OH Leuven.

Following a poor spell at Arsenal, his lack of form continued in Belgium – managing just two clean sheets in 20 games. He has two years left on his deal and Arsenal are ready to admit they made a mistake and sell him.

ARSENAL HAVE ADDED NELSON AND RUNARSSON TO TRANSFER LIST

Ultimately, both need to go. Neither have a future at Arsenal. The Gunners have just signed USA international Matt Turner in net, and want to sign Raphinha. Even Nicolas Pepe and Leno are being linked with the exit door.

But both are above Runarsson and Nelson in the pecking order – meaning that the duo need to leave. Nelson is good enough to play in the Premier League, albeit for a club in the bottom half. Runarsson may go back abroad.
