Mikel Arteta reveals how Arsenal squad have been impressed with Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Newcastle v Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi final, Mikel Arteta was asked about the recent performances of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Arteta stated: “The players are perhaps the best to speak about them because they are sitting next to them, they share the pitch with them and I’ve always said it’s how they feel about these young players coming in.”
The Gunners boss explained that the senior players give him a big indication as to when it is the right time to embed younger players in the side.
Arteta explained: “Do they trust them? Do they feel as though they are as strong or stronger with them? And that’s the feeling that I get when we’ve given them the opportunity because for me they are ready.
It was also mentioned by Arteta how he feels ‘responsible’ for looking after the younger players and instilling the right values in them for the football club.
Lewis-Skelly could be set for an England call up
The form of left back Lewis-Skelly has been so impressive in recent weeks that it is being reported that he may be in line for an England call up from new manager Thomas Tuchel.
According to the Mirror, the Arsenal youngster has impressed Tuchel in recent weeks and could be the answer to England’s problems at left back.
It has been a rapid rise for the Hale End graduate having only made his Premier League debut for the club back in December against Everton.
In amongst the hype and the attention, Arteta will be sure to keep both him and Nwaneri focused on learning the game and developing into even better prospects for the club.
