Erik ten Hag took aim at his players for not sticking to their new game plan as Manchester United suffered an embarrassing 3-1 loss at home to Brighton.
The Red Devils slumped to their third defeat in five Premier League games to extend their nightmare start to the season, showing shoddy defending and a blunt attack on Saturday. Ten Hag, usually uncompromising in his shape, employed a midfield diamond as opposed to his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, a decision which worked well before Brighton took an early lead through Danny Welbeck.
Then, according to the United manager, his players strayed from the plan. “Absolutely [the system worked],” a glum Ten Hag proclaimed on MUTV post-match. “The first 20 minutes were very good. We have to stick to the plan [despite the goal] because it worked well. We had quite a few chances.”
The Dutchman added to Sky Sports: “There’s always some improvements to make, especially the organisation. But is was not our day. The second goal was straight after half-time. Second chance second goal, very clinical. It was a setback we did not deal with so good. but we have to keep positive in such moments and stick together and you will get back onto the game.
“You learn many things from such a game. From the mental side, you can keep strong in moments but I have seen some good stuff. the way we created many chances we are just not finishing them, but that will change.”
Red Devils midfielder Christian Eriksen echoed his manager’s disappointment, telling Match of the Day: “It is a heavy one. We have to look at ourselves. We changed some things but we are disappointed. In the first half we had a lot of moments, had good control.
“They had a lot of possession but not many chances. They then score with their first chance and the system they play they keep the ball a lot and we had to chase it down. But we still had chances to get back into the game.”
Asked what needs to be done to turn United’s form around, Eriksen added: “The small things. We had the offside at Arsenal and today when we scored but it was out of play. The small things we are missing and a bit of luck to get over the line and get something out of the effort we put in.
“Any game at the start of the season, doesn’t matter who you play, is very important. We focus on our games and whoever we play we want to win. But we have lost three already and we have to change that.”
