BREAKING Arsenal best defender now wanted in shock Bayern Munich transfer after Arteta axe -NOT William Saliba
Arsenal fans who remember Sokratis Papastathopoulos may be baffled to hear that he is now being linked with Bayern Munich.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos could make a stunning move to Bayern Munich nearly three years since Arsenal ripped up his contract.
That is according to German newspaper Focus, who claim that Bayern could move to sign Sokratis on a free transfer.
Bayern have been left in a defensive crisis of late with injuries mounting following Benjamin Pvard’s move to Inter Milan.
Matthijs de Ligt has a knee injury whilst Dayot Upamecano now has a thigh injury, prompting Bayern to consider a free agent signing.
Former Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos wanted by Bayern Munich
Bayern brought Jerome Boateng in for training before deciding against offering him a contract at the Allianz Arena.
That was before Upamecano’s injury and that means Bayern are back to considering potential signings outside of the transfer window.
It’s now suggested that Bayern could move to sign Sokratis on a free transfer given his relationship with boss Thomas Tuchel.
Sokratis and Tuchel worked together at Borussia Dortmund between 2015 and 2017 with the defender racking up 81 appearances.
Focus claim that Tuchel loves Sokratis for his ‘tireless commitment’ and could now engineer a reunion at Bayern on a free transfer.
Arsenal fans may be baffled by Sokratis rumours
Sokratis to Bayern at the age of 35 may leave Arsenal fans scratching their heads in complete bemusement.
The Greek centre back had his contract ripped up by Arsenal back in January 2021 having failed to convince Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal releasing Sokratis allowed him to join Olympiacos, where he won two league titles before leaving at the end of last season.
Gunners supporters cannot have expected to hear rumours of Sokratis joining one of the European elite but here we are with Bayern considering a move.
Who knows, if things line up in the Champions League, we could yet see Sokratis featuring against Arsenal in the knockout stages in a quite unbelievable turn of events.
