Juventus midfielder is holding out for a move to a Champions League team, amid interest from Liverpool.
Rabiot is set to be a free agent at the end of the month, and the Reds have often been linked with his signing. According to L’Equipe today though, the 28-year-old is taking his time to decide his future.
The French outlet report that Rabiot remains keen on a move to the Premier League, but appears to favour joining Manchester United. The Old Trafford club are said to be ‘front-runners’ to bring him to England. However, no offer has arrived just yet from United.
This could leave the door for other interested parties – namely Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. But with Rabiot preferring a team playing in next year’s Champions League, that trio appear to be out of luck.
The France international does have an offer on the table – an extension from current club Juventus. He’s said to be happy in Turin and hasn’t yet turned the Old Lady down. With Juve also not competing at Europe’s top table in 2023/24 though, Rabiot will continue to wait for Man United.
Rabiot waiting for the right offer
Had Rabiot been offered around 12 months ago, we don’t think he’d have had too many takers. But the Frenchman has seen his stock on the rise over the last season.
An excellent personal campaign with Juve was punctuated by a World Cup where he proved his quality as a starter for France.
Once again, the leggy midfielder looks like the man Gigi Buffon called ‘fantastic’ back in 2019 [Sport Star]. Playing at his best, Rabiot is well-suited to playing football at the highest level.
Despite that, age is no longer on his side. Coupled with his high wages, Rabiot isn’t anywhere near as attractive an option as he was when leaving PSG for Juventus on a free back in 2019.
As he ticks into the latter part of his twenties, it’s no wonder the Parisian is taking his time to decide his future. Juve will gladly keep him on, but Rabiot has always spoken of his love for English football – and Liverpool in particular.
Should an offer arrive, it feels likely that he’d jump at the chance.
If he truly isn’t considering non-Champions League clubs though, United seem like the only option. If the Red Devils don’t fancy him, we’d bank on him staying in Italy. He shouldn’t be taken off the table for Liverpool, but we’d be astounded if he ended up at Anfield.
