Manchester United are stepping up their chase for a new number one, with the latest reports indicating a bid is imminent for Andre Onana.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy, Manchester United are ‘in a hurry’ to sign the Cameroonian goalkeeper. The report even goes as far as suggesting a bid is imminent in ‘the next few hours’.
The United hierarchy have decided that Andre Onana is the man to replace long term number one, David de Gea who’s contract has now expired.
The report expects a move to materialise quickly with the club keen to have him signed by Tuesday ahead of pre-season training commencing.
The goalkeeper represents a 180 degree turn from the keeper who he would be replacing, with the two having completely different qualities.
Onana is a modern goalkeeper who perfectly suits Erik ten Hag‘s vision for his number one. Having worked together at Ajax, ten Hag referred to him as “a masterful goalkeeper’.
The sentiment is shared by Pep Guardiola who praised the keeper following the Champions League final.
“When you have a goalkeeper like Onana who can read perfectly where everyone is to pass to, with Calhanoglu and Barella, then the strikers hold it up and move the ball around.”
The Spanish manager continued “It is very, very difficult. It would be a tiny bit easier without this goalkeeper, but still very tough.”
How Onana will be a game changer for United
It really can’t be understated the impact Onana will have on this Manchester United side. A goalkeeper who is as good on the ball as a midfielder and as composed as one too.
This a far cry from the poor decisions, composure and ball ability of the departing Spaniard.
Gone will be the days which saw our defenders put under immense pressure due to poor passing out from de Gea. With Onana we will be a much more effective team in possession and at playing out from the back.
Not to mention he is a dominant presence in the box, claiming crosses which was almost non existent previously.
