Michael Carrick could play a key role in Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United future.
That is according to former Red Devils and England masseuse Rod Thornley.
Rashford is currently on loan at Spanish giants Barcelona, who have an option to sign him permanently in the summer.
Although they have opened talks with United over a deal, the 28-year-old’s future has yet to be finalised.
He still has over two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford.
However, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, Rashford has not featured for United since December 2024.
Rashford’s United future
Thornley has now lifted the lid on Rashford’s demeanour around the club prior in recent seasons.
The academy graduate has made 426 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 138 goals and providing 79 assists.
Speaking to The Busby Way podcast, Thornley explained: “I’ll say it, I don’t mind, I know Marcus, and if he’s not happy with what I say, I don’t care.
“He became unhappy. He became a different person. I watched this player that used to be a happy, lovely kid just moping around, especially in the club.
“Outside the club, I used to see him every now and then, and he was fine outside the club, but in the club, he had this demeanour about him that just wasn’t great.
“Then it transferred onto the pitch, and then you see him walking around, and you just wanted energy levels out of him, which is what Michael Carrick is doing now.
“He’s getting energy levels out of the players, and you wanted that out of Marcus, but you just weren’t getting it, and it was tossed off basically.
“For me, he’s half tossed off his Manchester United career rather than it has been taken away from him.”
Rashford scored on both his first-team and Premier League debut for United after bursting into the side aged 18 in 2016.
The forward has also won six trophies with the Red Devils, including the Europa League and two FA Cups.
However, he fell out of favour under former manager Ruben Amorim last season.
The Portuguese was sacked by United last month, with Michael Carrick now in caretaker charge until the end of the campaign.
Carrick key to Rashford return
Asked if he thinks there is a world in which Carrick will bring Rashford back to the club, Thornley added: “Yes, I really do because it’s his club.
“He loves the club, and he’s still got the talent definitely and he’s proving that in Barcelona but what he needs is the consistency and the hunger again. It’s the hunger that he needs.”
Rashford has scored ten goals and added 13 assists in 34 appearances for Barca across all competitions this season.
As for Carrick, he is unbeaten since returning to United, winning four of his five matches in charge.
