David de Gea never got to bid Old Trafford farewell, but Manchester United could give him the chance this weekend.
Having played for Manchester United between 2011 and 2023, David de Gea goes down as a club legend in the books of many fans.
United made De Gea England’s most expensive goalkeeper, signing him as a wonderkid from Atletico Madrid. Having saved the club for years in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson struggles, De Gea is among the top appearances makers at United with 545 in total.
No matter how his final year went, United handled De Gea’s release terribly, with the club not giving him a chance to say goodbye to the fans.
De Gea was left upset by Erik ten Hag’s treatment of him over the 2022/23 season, and rightly so, with the general consensus being that the Dutchman made countless poor decisions like this.
However, De Gea returns to Old Trafford this weekend with Fiorentina, which could finally see the legend given the respectful send off he deserved.
De Gea is one of United’s best ever goalkeepers, and he did incredibly well to fill the gloves of Edwin van der Sar at such a young age for the club.
When United signed De Gea, he was more potential than anything else, but Ferguson saw how could he was going to be.
“He’s a young goalkeeper, very quick, good composure, presence and an outstanding replacement for Van der Sar,” Ferguson said after the deal was completed, as quoted by BBC Sport.
“We were looking for the same type of qualities as Edwin, because the one great quality Edwin always had was his composure and organisational ability.”
Following this, De Gea also spoke on the deal, admitting his pride and telling fans he would try his best for the club, which he did.
“I feel very proud and I can’t wait to start playing here,” De Gea explained.
“When a club the size of Manchester United comes in for you, it obviously makes you very, very happy. I’m keen to do my best and show what I can do.”
Over his 12 years at the club, De Gea won the club’s player of the year award four times and so it is safe to say he achieved this.
David de Gea’s very best saves for Manchester United
While it was a sour end to his Manchester United career, there is no denying that between 2015 and 2020, De Gea was arguably the best in the world.
De Gea struggled on the ball, however, when it comes to saving shots there really hasn’t been a better goalkeeper.
De Gea had an ability to look nowhere near a shot one moment, only to miraculously get a hand or foot to the ball.
There is a long list of his world class saves, but De Gea’s 2014/15 save against Everton stands out as the very best. After a corner, the ball dropped on the edge of the box and was met with a sweet volley.
Almost in slow motion, it was top corner bound and De Gea was unsighted, only reacting at the last minute with an instinctive save which is highly memorable.
Another memory many will have is when De Gea made 14 saves in one game against Arsenal, which is utter insanity.
Hopefully, he is not in this form on Saturday, but it will be a long awaited opportunity to show the ex-Spanish international some love
