Matheus Cunha made his Premier League debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s defeat to Arsenal.
The 2025/26 Premier League campaign has started with defeat after Manchester United lost 1-0 to Arsenal at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim’s side dominated play and were much better than the Gunners for the majority of the match, but Riccardo Calafiori’s header was the only goal of the game.
New signing Benjamin Sesko started on the bench and came on as a substitute, but Bryan Mbeumo and £62.5m signing Matheus Cunha both started in Amorim’s first XI of the season.
Matheus Cunha’s message to fans after Man United lose to Arsenal
United fans were amazed by Cunha’s performance against Arsenal, with the Brazilian playmaker showing glimpses of brilliance on his league debut.
Cunha came close to scoring on multiple occasions, including one instance in the first half where he carried the ball from his own half and beat several Arsenal defenders.
After the full-time whistle, Cunha vented his frustration on Instagram with a passionate message to United fans.
“We deserved so much more!” Cunha wrote.
“What an honor to debut in this environment. We will continue to improve. It’s just the beginning.”
Cunha’s teammate Mbeumo was quick to reply to his post, writing: “For sure bro”, while Brazil star Vinicius Junior also wrote: “Joga muito” which translates to: “Play too hard”.
Matheus Cunha impressed for Man United vs Arsenal
As United’s first signing of the summer, Cunha has had the longest time to work with Amorim and his staff this summer, and he immediately looked like a good fit at Old Trafford.
Rio Ferdinand was stunned by Cunha after watching his performance against Arsenal. In particular, his link-up play and ball-carrying added a new level to United’s attack.
Cunha played the full 90 minutes and was easily one of United’s best performers. His heat map proves he had an impact across the entire attacking third.
Bruno Fernandes wants more from Cunha, suggesting he has huge potential to become a superstar at United.
After United missed out on points against Arsenal, Cunha and Co. will be desperate for a win when the Red Devils face Fulham next Sunday.
