TBR Football understands that Manchester United have told Kobbie Mainoo to wait until later in the year before they decide whether he can leave the club in January.
Mainoo has long been unsettled under Ruben Amorim, while the club have also failed to make progress over a potential new deal – despite the fact talks began more than 12 months ago, even before he scored the winner in the FA Cup final.
Kobbie Mainoo’s plight has not improved this season with just one start to his name, the League Cup defeat at Grimsby Town, and his lack of game time means he is currently not under consideration by England boss Thomas Tuchel.
The 20-year-old asked to be allowed to leave in the summer but the club refused to sanction his exit, although we understand Ruben Amorim would not have stood in his way.

TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has been told that Mainoo has made it clear to United that he wants to be allowed to leave in January.
Previously, Mainoo was only looking at a loan, but we are now told that a permanent deal could be the best option.
TBR Football can confirm that interest remains high in Mainoo. Chelsea and Tottenham both hold the player in high regard, while Newcastle and Bournemouth are keeping tabs on him.
However, sources have now confirmed that Manchester United have informed Mainoo that no decision will be made on him until the end of the year, as they anticipate his role could have changed by that point.
Bailey explained: “Kobbie Mainoo is unsettled to say the least. He is not playing, there is no new contract – it is easy to see why he is not too happy.
“But the club have told him to wait until the end of the year – they want him to see what the situation is at that point.”
John Obi Mikel shocked by Kobbie Mainoo’s situation
With Mainoo still yet to start in the Premier League this season, Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel admitted he was gobsmacked by his lack of game time.
Mikel also pointed to the midfielder’s cameo in the 3-1 defeat against Brentford last weekend, declaring he was at fault for one of the goals United conceded.
“What has happened to Kobbie Mainoo? What has happened to that kid? What has happened to that kid? Doesn’t fancy him. I watched him when he came on the pitch,” he said on The Obi One Podcast.
“[He is] a shadow of who he was when he burst into the scene. A shadow of who he was, Kobbie Mainoo. Was at fault for the second goal or [the] third goal.
“He looked heavy. He looked like he doesn’t know what he’s doing, Kobbie Mainoo.”
