Ruben Amorim has been sacked by Manchester United boss less than 24 hours after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United.
The under-pressure boss saw his side come from 1-0 down to take a point from Elland Road on Sunday. Brenden Aaronson opened the scoring for Leeds with a brilliant finish on the hour mark but it was cancelled out by Matheus Cunha within three minutes.
After the game, Amorim’s press conference took a turn when he was quizzed on his own future. The Portuguese boss hit out at those labelling him a head coach instead of manager and walked out while questions were still coming his way.
“You guys need to stop with that. I notice you get selective information on everything” he said. “I came here to be the manager, not the coach of Manchester United. That is clear.
“I know my name is not Tuchel, a Mourinho, a Conte, but it is going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decides to change. That’s my point. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy is coming to replace me.
“If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticisms of everything we need to change the club. I came here to be the manager, not the coach. I will do my job for 18 months and we will then move on.”
Those quotes attracted plenty of attention and seemingly irked Old Trafford chiefs. On Monday morning, The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported Amorim had been sacked after a decision was taken by the leadership team.
