Ruben Amorim has been sacked by Manchester United, with the weekend’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United his final match in charge of the Premier League club. Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher, a former midfielder at the club under Sir Alex Ferguson, will be in charge for Thursday morning AEDT’s clash with Burnley.
United sit sixth on the table, but beyond form alone, there have been signs of discontent in recent weeks, with The Athletic reporting that there had been “a breakdown” in the relationship between the Portuguese and director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada.
He was under contract until 2027 and the club will reportedly need to pay him out in full.
“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United,” the club said in a statement.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
